Learning Through Play: Small Tools, Big Impact

In under-resourced ECD centres, learning often happens without the tools children need to fully explore and grow. Through the distribution of educational toys and learning materials, that reality is changing. Across 49 centres, children now have more opportunities to learn through play, practise new skills, and build confidence in safe, supported environments.

This story forms part of Topsy Foundation’s wider ECD South Africa work in rural Mpumalanga. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is not only about classroom time; it is about giving children the right stimulation, nutrition, caregiver support, and learning materials during the most important years of development.

Educational toys and practical resources help ECD practitioners create lessons that are active, playful, and age appropriate. They also support accredited ECD practitioner training by giving practitioners tools they can use to strengthen fine motor skills, early language, problem solving, social development, and school readiness.

For many children in rural communities, these small tools make a big difference. A puzzle, counting game, storybook, or set of blocks can help a child participate more fully, communicate more confidently, and experience learning as something joyful. This supports Topsy’s holistic child and family support model, which connects child nutrition programmes, food security, ECD, and family support.

Support from CSI managers, grant funders, individual donors, international donors, and corporate partnerships helps keep these resources moving into the centres that need them most. To support ECD South Africa initiatives through Topsy, contact Topsy Foundation.

The same approach also helps Topsy measure what changes over time. When learning materials reach practitioners, the team can see how children engage, where extra training is needed, and which centres need further support. This gives donors a practical view of measurable community impact rather than a once-off handover.

For CSI managers and grant funders, ECD South Africa support through Topsy is a focused way to invest in school readiness, practitioner confidence, and rural community support South Africa can build on year after year.

It is simple, practical support, but it strengthens the daily rhythm of learning in every participating centre.
