Changing the Story: From Unemployment to Entrepreneurship

When Mimmie Mncube joined the Create Your Own Job programme, she was not just looking for skills. She was looking for a way forward. Today, she is building her own laundry business. With the support she received, including funding of R20,000, she has been able to turn training into practical progress.

This is Community Development in action. Topsy Foundation’s work is not only about immediate relief; it is also about helping people build confidence, income potential, and independence. Skills development, mentoring, and practical support can help families move from uncertainty toward a more stable future.

In rural communities across Mpumalanga, unemployment affects households, children, and caregivers. When adults gain the tools to create work, the impact reaches beyond one person. It can support family stability, improve access to food, strengthen dignity, and help parents and caregivers provide more consistent support for children.

Topsy’s community-led development model connects entrepreneurship support with broader programmes such as food security, women’s health programmes, family support, and Early Childhood Development (ECD). This holistic approach helps address the systems that keep families vulnerable while still recognising the personal courage behind each story.

CSI managers, grant funders, government departments, community organisations, and corporate partnerships can help expand Community Development initiatives like this. To support skills development and rural community support in South Africa, contact Topsy Foundation.

Stories like Mimmie’s also show why community development must be practical and personal. A training session, a small grant, mentoring, and follow-up support can help someone move from an idea to a working service that responds to local needs. That progress can then create a stronger household and a stronger local economy.

This is the kind of sustainable change that funders often look for: community-led development, measurable community impact, and support that can continue after the first intervention. Topsy’s role is to walk alongside people as they build that next step.

As more families gain access to opportunities like this, the benefits can reach children, caregivers, and neighbours who depend on a stronger local support system.
