A Story in Their Own Words: Building Confidence Through Reading

In many classrooms, learning begins with unfamiliar words.

But when a child opens a book written in their own language, something changes.

They understand.

They connect.

They feel seen.

Through the African Storybook initiative, children in Topsy-supported ECD centres now have access to books that reflect their language, culture, and identity.

Across 30 centres, these stories are helping children build confidence and develop a love for reading from an early age.

It is not just about literacy.

It is about belonging.
