Our Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programme came into existence in 2014. We started out with a Play and Learn Centre which served 1300 children a year, and partnerships with 24 ECD centres. The word spread and impact was noticed by other principals in the area.
This programme is part of Topsy Foundation’s wider ECD South Africa work, supporting children during the crucial early years of their development. Early learning is strengthened through play, stimulation, child nutrition programmes, caregiver support, and practical resources for ECD practitioners.
In rural Mpumalanga, many children face barriers that affect their readiness for school. Poverty, food insecurity, limited access to resources, and pressure on families can all shape a child’s early development. Topsy responds with holistic child and family support that connects ECD, food security, family support, and community-led development.
ECD practitioner training is also central to the programme. When practitioners have the right skills and resources, they can create safer, more stimulating environments where children can learn through play, build confidence, and develop the foundations they need for future education.
Support from donors, CSI managers, grant funders, corporate partnerships, government departments, and community organisations helps Topsy continue this work. Each partnership strengthens proven impact across Mpumalanga and helps more children access early learning, nutrition, and care.

The programme continues to grow because it works with the people closest to the children: practitioners, parents, caregivers, principals, and community organisations.
