The South African NGO sector has almost doubled in size since the Topsy Foundation’s inception in 2000. Effectively, this has made the local funding arena vastly more competitive. In addition, one of the major challenges faced by any South African NGO seeking funding from the UK grant-making market, is that of tax-exemption on the part of the donor. To facilitate fundraising from trusts and grantmaking organisations in the United Kingdom specifically, the directors of the Topsy Foundation decided to establish a formal UK entity in London, which would allow donors to make donations to Topsy in a mutually beneficial financial environment.
On recommendation of Oliver Karius, Managing Director and Co-Founder of VantagePoint Global, based in Zürich, an organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable investing in emerging markets, Duke and Silja contacted Bates Wells & Braithwaite. Bates Wells & Braithwaite is reputed to be the leading firm in the field of charity and social enterprises in the UK. Bates Wells & Braithwaite reduced their charges for setting up Topsy UK.
The Topsy Foundation UK was formally incorporated on 19 May 2006 and registered with the Charities Commission on 24 July 2006.
